Performing with the Saint-Lawrence Choir

"The Junior Choir"

The Choeur des Enfants de Montréal is an independent choir of young Montrealers who perform a diverse and spirited repertoire under the direction of Iwan Edwards. Members of the choir receive a musical education from one of the best choral conductors in Canada, while they develop a sense of camaraderie. The choir performs a challenging range of both secular and sacred music, including folk songs from around the world. An independent, non-profit organization founded in 2001, it is supported by fees paid by its members, private donations and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.

The children, who range in age from 9 to 17, present concerts and musical cantatas on their own, while also sharing the stage with other musical groups, such as the St. Lawrence Choir. This season, Chœur des enfants de Montréal will sing with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal in their annual Christmas concert and at the concert “The Many Faces of Heroism” under the baton of Kent Nagano on May 20, 2007.

Iwan Edwards, artistic director, is recognized for his accomplishments as an educator, adjudicator, and coach nurturing the next generation of professional singers. His life-long dedication to the development of Canadian music and singers is a hallmark of his musical programming. Director of the Chorus of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal and founder of the 90-voice St. Lawrence Choir, he has been involved in many choirs for young people, including the F.A.C.E. (Fine Arts Core Education) Treble Choir which he directed for twenty years.

Maestro Edwards is the recipient of several prestigious awards in recognition of his extensive achievements and contributions to music in Canada, including his appointment as a Member of the Order of Canada in 1995. In 2002, he was awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal.
